I just watched Jonathan Ross (BBC interview show) and this time Bob Hoskins and JK Rowling were two of his guests. During his interview with Bob Hoskins, Jonathan mentioned it was weird Bob had never starred in any of the Harry Potter films. Bob then told about a previous encounter with JK Rowling, where she had promised to write a character for him. Cut to: JK Rowling who kind of cringed, clearly having forgotten that she had ever promised that. She did, however, say that there will be a new character in book 7: a older male wizard, which could be played by Bob Hoskins. This could be only useless interview prattle, but it might turn out to be an actual casting.
Update: I sent this same bit of info to AICN and they’ve actually posted it!

I saw that intervieuw too, lots of fun, and I immidelately jumped to the conclusion that JKR saw, like I have done since the release of HBP, Bob Hoskin as Horace Slughorn.
I was a bit miffed when Broadbent was casted for that role.
But indeed she spoke of DH, so maybe she had Elphias Doge in mind, a new character presented, However one never knows with the WB casting director deceides.
Today I read that the casted a Young Lucius Malfoy for HBP…… where in heck is there a line in HBP that even mentions Lucius in his teenage days?

I kind of assumed that whatever character JKR had in mind at that moment that we hadn’t seen him before. So I wasn’t really expecting Bob Hoskin to be cast as Slughorn.
I’m not really sure what character JKR means. It could be Elphias Doge, but doesn’t he appear in the books much earlier? The only other character I can think of is Luna Lovegood’s father, but I think he’s supposed to be a bit younger then Hoskins. I can’t think of any other character that might fit the bill.
I guess the movie might feature Lucius Malfoy also in flashbacks. I mean, he is about the same age as Snape and Harry’s parents, right? I only don’t understand why they would want to do that; he’s not part of that story.

yeah, you are right, Elphias Doge was in OotP, played by Peter Cartwright ,
although he has only a minute or less of footage in the rescue party.
I certainly don’t hope they going to give Hospkin the role of Xenophilius Lovegood.
That character is abit of the Mr.Bean of the Wizarding World, so I would love to see the real mr.Bean or better Rowan Atkinson as Luna’s father.
But there is of course Ted Tonks, who knows.
Till now I haven’t predicted one casting right. Some luck, because Imelda Staunton turned out to be the best surprice since Alan Rickman played in Robin Hood.
