The Hollywood Reporter has just reported that Sam Raimi is producing a new TV show based on Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series. It’s going to be a live-action weekly series about (if you don’t know the books:) Richard Cypher, a woodsman, who teams up with the mysterious Kahlan on a quest into another realm (that’s all I can tell without giving too much of the plot away). The production of the first 22 episodes will start beginning of May.
This is great! I’ve been saying for years that they shouldn’t try to make movies of fantasy books. Most stories are way too complex for a movie from 3 hours long and they always get trimmed wrong. Did anybody here see The Golden Compass? The last scene of the book, which was what made the book so good, got completely left out of the movie. So, I’m glad that for once they’re going to take the time make to make a proper TV serie.
I’m only worried about the quality of the show:
Raimi is executive producing the hourlong series with Robert Tapert (”The Grudge”), Joshua Donen (”The Quick and the Dead”) and “Xena: Warrior Princess” production executive Ned Nalle. Disney-ABC Domestic TV is distributing, and ABC Studios is producing.
Okay, they’ve got one of the guys from Xena and Sam Raimi himself worked on Young Hercules. I’ve got my fingers crossed that they’re not going into the direction of those type of series. It could easily become too cheesy and for once I want a good grown-up fantasy series. Is that too hard too ask?
I’m also not sure how they’re exactly going to do the episodes. Most TV shows are episodic and studios really want stand-alone episodes. The article says:
In discussing these incredible story lines and rich characters with my friends and partners Robert Tapert and Josh Donen, we agreed that ‘Wizard’s First Rule’ would make an amazing television series — one that could be produced with compelling, self-contained episodes.
So do they mean that the events in the book can be correctly translated to self-contained episodes? Or does it mean that it leaves room over to create stand-alone episodes and thus doesn’t follow the book? I hope it’s the former, cause I’m not sure it would benefit the storyline to have the main character do “other” stuff.
Now, I’m most curious to see who they’re going to cast for Richard and Kahlan. I always pictured Richard as someone sturdy (does that make sense?), so not some pretty boy like Milo Ventigmilia (Peter in Heroes). More someone like a younger and brunette (is it still “ette” when you’re talking about a guy?) Kiefer Sutherland. For Kahlan, I picture someone like the Claire Danes’s character in Stardust, only less chirpy and sweet. Kahlan is tough, regal and strict and they need someone who can pull that face off. I’m guessing they’ll go for completely unknown people, but still it’s great to speculate.
So what do you guys think? Psyched for the series or scared that it could completely flop?

X:WP was a ‘grown up fantasy series’ if thats what you want to call it. Sure it had some “cheesy” moments, but those were for the comedic episodes anyway, which were supposed to be funny and was. The character and show of Xena was dark and far more complex than that of H:TLJ. Hercules in the beginning was (somewhat) the same way, but later became really goofy.

I never followed Xena, but from the episodes I saw, it “looked” cheesy. I’m sure the story and plot lines were great, but I was talking more about the special effects and feel of the series.
A better example might be Flash Gordan and Battlestar Galactica. Flash Gordan is just pure cheesiness (not only the special effects, but also the plot), while BSG is just brilliant. I’m not saying I want Wizard’s to look like BSG, but I want them to at least try to get their own special style.

I’m afraid… very afraid that this will turn out badly..
This is one of the best fantasy serie out there.. (A few books are so so, but globally, the serie is awesome)… and I don’t think anyone could do it justice…

@Kiltak: I loved the books and I’m so scared this isn’t going to go well. I’ve read each book at least 3 times (some of them more) and each time I know I picture the world and characters differently. If I alone can interpret it in different ways, how would other people interpret it? There will never be a correct adaption that everybody’s going to like.
I’m at least glad that they’re making a series out of it and not trying to translate it to a movie. This has some chance of getting the story right. Fingers crossed!

Rofl, never thought I would find someone as obsessed about this serie as I am
In fact, I’ve read my whole book collection several time over… and as the collection grows, it takes more and more time to go through it..
Ever read anything from R.A. Salvatore?
February 8th, 2008 at 14:17
I haven’t re-read my entire collection (that would just be impossible), but most of my favourite series and unfinished series I’ve read at least twice.
Haven’t read anything from Salvatore yet. I want to, but every time I just have no idea where in heavens to start. Any suggestions?

Lol, usually, you start from the beginning
Start with these:
1- The Legend of Drizzt, Book I
2- The Legend of Drizzt, Book II
3- Legacy of the Drow
4- Paths of Darkness
Then, I think this follows:
The Hunter’s Blades Trilogy
Anyways, check out RA salvatore’s website: http://www.rasalvatore.com/

read it twice, that’s not obsessed, I’ve read Lord of the Rings 247 times (started in high school back in 1976), I read it continously for 1 year, that was 43 times in only 1 year. I found Sword of Truth series when they came out with Chainfire, and I’m on my 8th complete read, adding in the last 2 books when they came out.
That aside, to say I was a hugh LOTR fan would be understating it, but look how great that series came out. It’s possible to take a great book and do it justice on the screen, we’ll all be keeping our fingers crossed. Sam is a very talented Director and the fact that Terry signed on to the deal he must have been satisfied and confident that it would do justice to his series.

It’s going to be complete and utter garbage unless it is going to be produced by a cable network(HBO or FX are my only real hope on this).
Plain and simple if you never read the book there are HUGE sexual and BDSM references thruought the series and if a regular network picks this up all that will be stripped away from the story; making it a rather generic fantasy story.
I’m not holding my breath on this one.

When I first hear that this series was being made into a TV show, I laughed, and then cried, because this series is terrible, plainly, and I couldn’t believe that anyone would give it a TV show. The series maintains readability through book 6, and all are decent. After and including book 7, they are utter trash and worthless. Since there are now almost an even number of good books and bad, I’m just going to call this whole series garbage. They deserve to be in the romance novel section of the supermarket, which is where I’ve seen them in my local supermarket over the past several years. That’s where I first saw that he had written Chainfire. I’ve read all of them, just to see whether there was another gem in there, like Faith of the Fallen, or Wizard’s First Rule, but no, they’ve degenerated into nothing but preaching capitalist economic ideology for pages at a time. Literally, 4-5 pages in a single speech, decrying the perils of communism.
As for the TV show, if it is indeed only Wizard’s First Rule, then I have hope that it might be ‘ok’, but I don’t really believe that it will be able to be translated into episodes. It’s a linear story, and it just doesn’t seem to be dividable. They may be able to pull something together, and get something that works, but I don’t know how. Every episode is going to have to end with a cliffhanger, and that doesn’t translate well to casual watching. I think it’ll be something like the Chronicles of Narnia movies, at least in how people react to them. It’s going to be terrible for those who have read and loved the books. If people have not read the series, then they’ll probably like it, because they won’t be aware of anything other than the the TV show.
Also, if anyone still cares, IMDB has listed the actors that are going to play Richard and Kahlan.
Richard: Craig Horner
Kahlan: Bridget Regan

Sam Raimi has a pretty good track record. I’ll give this one a try.

I have to agree with John, the books jumped the shark long before the story was done being told. My personal feeling is that the first few were too successful, and no one told the author how lousy the latter ones were because of his early success. He easily could have cut out two of those books just leaving out the constant repetitive preaching about “living your own life,” and the evils of socialism. There were entire huge events produced in some books that turned out to be completely of no account by the end … heck, the main plot of the first book (one of the better ones) was entirely negated by the last.
However, condensing the story to a TV show might be the best thing for it. Goodkind, simply put, was too wordy for his own good. What he really, badly needed was a good editor roping him in and truly polishing the storytelling down to its essentials. Perhaps a TV screenplay will do that.

Urgh. I’m sorry, but the series was garbage. The first book was amazing, but they got worse and worse as they went on, and I eventually stopped reading them. The many contradictions and unexplained changes clearly pointed out that Goodkind had no plan whatsoever for the series. Richard grew monumentally more powerful each and every book, with no meaningful character development. All of his chracters are flimsy and only serve to further his ridiculous propaganda. Plus he borrowed so many ideas from the Wheel of Time and then ruined them.
The Wheel of Time would make a much better choice.

Hi, I found this all by accident, I had not realised at all that this was going to be made into a tv series….
I just had to add my comments. I loved the books, I picked up wizards first rule in a second hand book store and it sat in my bookcase for ages. Once I started reading I was hooked, I love all the books, Ive now read them all a few times and keep going back to them.
I hate it when books I love are made into either movies or tv series… I hated the first lord of the rings movie. I couldnt believe what they did to it, however, on watching it again and telling myself to forget that it was a book i loved and they missed out bits etc I really enjoyed it. I love the fact that it got other people into the story and reading the books. My daughter actually read the books after seeing the movie.. a thing I couldnt get her to do previously.
However, I am a huge Terry Pratchett fan, and I was upset at how his books were made into a tv mini series, this was with Pratchett having a huge say in the script and filming etc.
so what I want to say is, I know for a fact its not going to be anything like my imagination. Its going to be somebody elses imagination that we are watching, I think Im going to give it a miss when we finally get to see it, because, Im just going to get upset. I may be wrong, it may turn out to be one of the greatest ever series, but some how I dont honestly believe it will be.
Well I suppose each of us to our own, and if your looking forward to seeing it I really hope that its everything you want it to be.

Hopefully everyone will give it a try. The TV show will have some slight alterations to the story, to fit the ongoing format of a series. I’ve read the first three scripts and have noted the changes and they work great. It should be exciting, action packed and good fun.

Hi from Sweden. I just love love love the Sword of truth series, have them all in english oufcourse =D

I think this will be great! I just saw the promo and based on that I just can’t wait for this show to start airing. Then again, they usually put the best and the only best bits in a trailer, but the special effects look worthy enough.
Craig Horner is easy on the eye( translation: Hot!) and Bridget Regan is pretty; and I think they look accurate enough for their roles. If the main actors can act the show will be a success.

Have been watching the “Legend of the Seeker” for a while now, and I am not happy about the way they have distorted the storyline. The series so far is only based on the first book, and they have gotten so far off track I find it hard to believe that it is based on the series of books by Terry Goodkind. Maybe I should write to the Producers, and Directors. I read somewhere that Terry was involved in the project and that he backed out. My guess is it was because of the way they decided to butcher his series of books.
