Okay, this looks awesome! I’m not exactly sure what is going on in the trailer, but it looks like Oblivion could be a fun sci-fi ride. It’s written and directed by Joseph Kosinski and is based on Kosinski’s graphic novel of the same name. He previously did Tron Legacy, which I enjoyed even if the story was a bit sucky, so I’m curious to see how Oblivion turns out.
What the hell is exactly going on there? I love the look of the movie and I’m hoping the story is smart and twisty. It looks like there’s going to be some twist with Jack and the mysterious girl… I think this might go on my Avoid-All-Trailers list, I think this could be a movie I could be pleasantly surprised by!
I can’t wait for the next Star Trek movie! I really enjoyed the “first” one and loved how they used time travel to change the Star Trek universe while still staying in canon. We now get a glimpse of the new movie in this teaser trailer:
We’re nearing the end of 2012, so it’s time for some retrospectives of the past year! This first one features a ton of movie trailers that came out this year; which ones have you all seen?
It’s also interesting reading what the creator of this video had to say about the story behind each segment:
PRIMA PARTE – The Pruitt-Igoe Myth: Pruitt-Igoe was a large urban housing project that became infamous for symbolizing the shattered dreams of many and was subject to a great documentary this year. By the late 1960’s, it had gone from a promise of a better future for thousands of families to a place of desolation, poverty and crime. Not unlike the fate of its inhabitants, many characters in this year’s motion pictures have had to endure a vision of the future that demanded for their hopes to make room for despair. From the Orwellian districts of The Hunger Games to the corporate conspiracies of Branded and the highly-controlled buildings of The Raid and Dredd 3D, dystopia certainly made its comeback this year.
SECONDA PARTE – Tick Tick Boom: A song that has been attempted in online movie mashups countless times. I always wanted to take a crack at it and celebrate every note of explosive silliness that transpire through this epic hit from The Hives. The inspiration I got from Tick Tick Boom wasn’t that it clearly promotes balls-out action all over the walls but that it does it with a sense of self-awareness and light parody. This is precisely the tone that we’ve found in offerings such as Battleship, The Expendables 2, and (last but not least) Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. These movies all know they’re silly but rather than convincing us of the contrary, they decide to embrace it and focus on giving us what we crave: great walls of fire erupting everywhere and heroes who can’t bother to look at them.
PARTE FINALE – Everything is Connected: My third segment was an attempt to explore what can only described in Hollywood as the merger of mainstream blockbusters and small independent films. Now more than ever, young and emerging filmmakers have the affordable technology in their post-production to make their shoestring-budgeted features feel as visually striking as a major studio production. On the other side of the coin, the big studios are increasing financing on their Oscar hopefuls and make sure to spare no expense in order to make a resourceful production look as indie as possible. I tried to blend the little movies, the big ones, and put my emphasis on those who happen to be one but pretending to be the other.
It’s been more than a month since I’ve done a trailer roundup! With the final Twilight movie finally being released, most of those trailers seem to be aimed at the Twilight crowd; which movie will be the next angsty teen paranormal box-office hit?
A magician heist movie? Count me in. This looks like it could be a lot of fun, and it’s got an awesome cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Woody Harrelson, Melanie Laurent, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. This could be a lot of fun indeed. Release Date: 7 June 2013 (US), 21 June 2013 (UK)
One for the Twihards. This paranormal teen romance is about Lean, a 15 year old witch who will need to choose between Light and Dark on her sixteenth birthday. It looks like a weird and gorgeous world, albeit a bit goofy. Release Date: 13 February 2013 (US, UK)
This looks good! I know it’s written by Twilight’s Stephanie Meyer, but it’s directed by Andrew Niccol and I’ve always enjoyed his movies. Release Date: 29 March 2013 (US, UK)
As the Barret family’s peaceful suburban life is rocked by an escalating series of disturbing events, they come to learn that a terrifying and deadly force is after them. Ooh, aliens! I used to watch a ton of alien abduction TV movies, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen one. Release Date: 22 February 2013 (US)
This looks cheesy as hell, but I kind of want to see it. Ewan McGregor’s hair! Those giants! It looks ridiculous and so-shiny-it-can’t-be-real fake, but part of me doesn’t care. Release Date: 1 March 2013 (US), 22 March 2013 (UK)
I like the look of this movie, even though it does seem a bit like an updated version of Fern Gully. I’m not sure about the title though; it doesn’t seem that “Epic”. Release Date: 24 May 2013 (US, UK)
I didn’t like Bridesmaids at all, so it doesn’t surprise me that I’m not liking this new movie from the same director. If you liked Bridesmaids, chance are you’ll like this. Release Date: 5 April 2013 (US, UK)
I’ve got the books lying around, but I still haven’t gotten around to reading them. It looks like it could be fun, but the acting and effect don’t look that promising. Still it can’t be as bad as Twilight. Release Date: 23 August 2013 (US, UK)
Yesterday I got invited to the premiere of Four Stories, the result of a world wide competition to give aspiring screenwriters the chance to bring their vision alive and turn their scripts into 10 minute short films. The four winning scripts were chosen by Roman Coppola and a panel of judges from over a 1000 submissions. The brief: each story had to take place at one of the W hotels and Intel’s Ultrabook had to be a central plot component.
Yeah… that doesn’t sound contrived at all. But I actually think they’ve made it all work. The four winning scripts do all feature a W hotel and an Ultrabook, but in almost all of them it does feel as if they belongs and not something tacked on for the sake of it.
There’s also a funny fifth movie called “Die Again, Undead One” which was directed by Roman Coppola and stars Jason Schwartzman, but it will only be released once the YouTube page gets 3000 shares.
Here are the four winning short movies:
Eugene
Eugene was written by Adam Blampied from London and filmed at the W Washington D.C. with director Spencer Susser and actors Michael Govier and Karolina Wydra. This one turned out to be my favourite of the four!
Modern Love
Modern Love was written by Amy Jacobowitz from Los Angeles and filmed at W Doha with director Lee Toland Krieger and actors Robert Schwartzman and Naomi Scott. I really enjoyed this one too, it’s sweet and romantic:
El Tonto!
Written by Ben Saveg from Brooklyn, N.Y., it was filmed at W Mexico City with director Lake Bell and actor Kyle Mooney. I’m not sure I “got” this one. It was funny-ish, but didn’t seem to have a real point to it.
The Mirror Between Us
Kahlil Joseph from Los Angeles wrote and directed “The Mirror Between Us,” filmed at W Retreat & Spa Maldives with actors Nicole Beharie and Dan’ee Doty. I honestly didn’t understand this one at all. Is it just me?
Back in July in one of my Trailerrific Thursday posts I featured the first trailer for Life of Pi. I still haven’t read the book on which it is based, but I’m so looking forward to see this movie. Well, some of you won’t have to wait any longer, cause it’s being released in cinemas in the US this week (21st of November to be exact)! In the UK we’ll have to wait for another month, which isn’t too bad considering certain other movies (*cough* Wreck-It-Ralph *cough, cough* Cloud Atlas).
Life of Pi is based on the best selling novel of the same name and is directed by Ang Lee. Visually I think this movie is going to be stunning, just take a look at the trailer:
I’m still wondering whether or not I should read the book first or go into the movie completely blind (well, as blind as you can be, after having watching the trailer, seen the posters, etc). Have you read the book? What would you suggest?
Thanks to 20th Century Fox, I’ve also got some movie stills and set photos to share with you:

A while ago I saw this cool tee on Threadless called Come Away With Me featuring the Tardis/The Doctor and Cinderella:
That tee is sadly sold out now, but it turns out that it was designed by artist Karen Hallion and she’s done a couple of other cool Doctor Who and Disney mashups. You can check out her DeviantArt page and her etsy shop where she sells prints of her illustrations.
My favourite design of hers is Part of Every World and is currently on sale as a tee-shirt on Ript:
Besides that tee, she’s currently got one called Adventure Awaits with Belle from Beauty and the Beast as a submission on Threadless; hopefully it will be made!
Finally I found two other Doctor Who related ones on her DeviantArt page. The first is with Rapunzel (You Comin’ Blondie?):
