I Was Donatello

February 5th, 2008

My last post got me wondering. When I was a kid, I used to have this custom/game/tradition/(not sure what I’m supposed to call it) with my brother and sister. Whenever we watched something, be it a tv show or a movie, we would have to pick one character out of the show, which we would have to “be”. We couldn’t be the same person and if you called it first, the other had to pick some one else.

Turtles

When the show wasn’t on, we wouldn’t actually do anything with the chosen characters. They only had meaning when we were watching the show. Besides rooting for them during an episode, you got to “be” them in the case that there was some special song or special sequence. For instance, in the case of Captain Planet, I was Linka. So whenever you had the Captain Planet summoning scene (which of course happened every episode), I got to shout “Wind!”.

For most TV shows I can remember exactly who me and my brother and sister were. For Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, I was Donatello, my brother Leonardo and my sister Michelangelo. With Samurai Pizza Cats, I was Polly Esther, my brother was Speedy Cerviche and my sister Guido Anchovy. For Power Ranger, I was the Pink Ranger (“Pterodactyl!”), my brother was the Red Ranger (until he decided the White Ranger was cooler), and my sister the Yellow Ranger. With X-Men, I was Rogue, my brother was Wolverine, and my sister Jubilee. Need I continue?

Pizza Cats

Am I (and my brother and sister) completely crazy? Looking back, it’s seems such a silly thing to do and I can’t help but wonder if other kids used to do this too. I was talking to Cristiano about this tonight and he never did such a thing when he was young. So please speak up; I want to know I wasn’t a complete crazy kid with these actions.

My Favourite Geeky Web Comics

February 4th, 2008

Until about a year ago, I didn’t really have a daily morning ritual. I wasn’t so addicted to my computer that I had to check it the moment I woke up. At the time I didn’t even follow any blogs or other news sources. Since I got a laptop though that kind of changed. My laptop is with hand’s reach of my bed and every morning I sit at least half an hour in bed, slowly waking up and reading all the items in my news reader. Among those items are a great collection of geeky web comics. I’ll share with you a couple of my favourites.

xkcd

Every geek should read xkcd; it’s a weird mix of humor, math, romance and language.

Geek and Poke

Cute comic with some great humor on blogging, Twitter and other “social media”.

Geek and Poke

Applegeeks

Surprisingly it’s not always Apple related.

Sinfest

I mainly like the cat and dog comics here. The rest can be funny at times, but the cat and dog are always hilarious.

Real Life Comics

Funny comic about a geeky couple, Greg and Liz.

PHD Comics

While I’m not doing a PHD, I am still trying to finish my master’s and this comic sometimes captures exactly how I’m feeling.

Interesting links for February 2nd through February 3rd:

  • Top 15 Clever Adverts – Some very interesting advertisement campaigns. A couple I had seen before (the camera lens is a bus wheel and the jaws of a shark bus doors), but most of them I had never seen before.
  • 20 of the Best Evil Lairs and Criminal Hideouts | Geek About – Great list of the lairs and hideouts from villains of movies.
  • Forbidden Kingdom Posters – Ooh, this posters from the Forbidden Kingdom are pretty! I always like those promotional one-sheets, featuring only one character. The image they make when they’re hung up together is much more convincing.

Interesting links for February 1st:

  • Funny Kitten – Awh, it’s a dancing ASCII art kitten! Some people have too much spare time.
  • Only in Russia? – Are these for real? Some of these photos are just ridiculous. That street lamp? The door above the heater?
  • How To Solve A Rubik’s Cube – Pictures for Beginners! – A tutorial on how to solve a Rubik’s Cube. Haven’t tried it out yet, but it’s one of those skills I’ve always wanted to learn. Yes, I’m that much of a geek.

Interesting links for January 30th through January 31st:

  • Another 20 Unfortunate Product Names – The List Universe – A list of products that don’t have the most advantageous names. Seriously though, why would companies even bother naming their products like this? Isn’t this just plain stupidness?
  • Muxicall – Create music online with other people. Trust me it’s not what you expect. There’s a grid of all the possible notes and the played notes of you and the other people are visualized on it.
  • Don’t Click It – Experimental web design without buttons. It’s kind of weird not having anything to click.
  • Creative photos by Chema Madoz – Very cool set of photos. I especially love the cherry in the scales and the ladder against the mirror.

Episode 30: “I’m not moving the mask, I’m not moving my head”

These are two videos of the same type of optical illusion. It consists of a simple sheet with a hollowed out face. When moving left or right, the face seems to follow you. The first video is the optical illusion with Einstein’s face; in the second the hollow part is painted.
