The Wizard of Outer Zone

March 2nd, 2007

I recently heard of this weird new version of The Wizard of Oz: the Sci-Fi Channel is going to produce a 6-hour mini serie Tin Man about a girl DG who’s thrust into the fantasy realm the Outer Zone (O.Z.). Zooey Deschanel has been cast as DG (from The HItchhikers Guide to the Universe and the sister of Emily Deschanel from Bones). I quote:

Tin Man is a psychedelic, often twisted and always outrageous take on the book. DG must discover her true identity, battle evil monkey-bats and fulfill her destiny. Her perilous journey begins on the fabled Old Road that leads to a wizard known as the Mystic Man.

I kind of figured out that I haven’t really been that productive lately. It’s not as if I’ve been doing nothing at all; quite the contrary: I’ve read a lot of papers, rewritten quite a bit of my literature research paper, discovered the joys of del.icio.us, Vienna and Growl, started my own blog, went to my first Girl Geek Dinner and celebrated my birthday. But I haven’t been able to stick to my deadlines, which I really have to start doing.

So because today is March the 1st, I’ve decided to make a list of my New Month’s Resolutions:

1. Deadlines are holy. I must stick to them no matter what.
2. I should write a new post for my blog every day.
3. No more ice cream!

Well, let’s see how long I can keep this up. The first is a must, but the second and third? We’ll see how they go ;-).

The origin of eBay

March 1st, 2007

A couple of days ago I was watching one of those morning BBC auction shows and they said that eBay began because the founder wanted a place for his fiancee to trade PEZ candy dispensers. I actually believed that (gullible me), but decided to have a closer look into it.

Apparently it’s not completly true. The guy just created it, because he saw a gap in the market. His wife did trade PEZ dispensers and did have some trouble trading them. The public-relations manager of the company overheard this and used it as a way to attract the media.

London Girl Geek Dinner

February 22nd, 2007

Yesterday I went together with Cristiano to my very first Girl Geek Dinner. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but it turned out to be really fun. It was held at the Balls Brothers bar near St Paul’s Cathedral, a very cute old-fashioned bar that was situated underground. When we arrived, there were already quite some people. The first half a hour I kind of just stood there, looking around, sipping the free wine and talking only to Cristiano. I’m not really the type to just go over to strangers and start talking to them!

Top 10 TV Series

February 17th, 2007

My name is Melinda, and I’m a Tv-holic. Seriously, I’m really addicted to my tv-series. I think in my lifetime (next week 23 years) I’ve watched more then 100 series…completely. As in: from start to finish, not only watching the occasional episode. I’ll have to look into it to see the exact amount of series (might even be 200 😀 ), but that’s for another time.

For now, here’s a list of what I find are the Top 10 series at the present moment:
