It’s again been more than a month since I last wrote something here. It has been so difficult for me to stay away; I keep coming across stuff I want to blog about and share with you all. It’s good though that for now I’m focusing on my thesis, and it’s finally paying off: I’ve got an official final presentation date! Yay!

As most of you may know, Comic-Con is happening now in San Diego and I so wish I was there! I keep saying each year that next year I’ll go, but so far I’ve never been able to make it. Every year though I try at least to find videos of the panels and share them here with you. So expect a couple of more posts about Comic-Con the next few days.

First up, is the Game of Thrones panel. I’m loving this TV show. I read the books and it’s such a loyal adaptation. I can’t wait to see next season! The panel was moderated by George R. R. Martin himself, and featured writers/producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and cast members Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke:

There are 4 more parts, which can be seen here: Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5.

I’ve been looking for a while now to find a handy solution for storing my jewellery. I’ve been using a sort of small basket-like container which I kept in a large red Estee Lauder cosmetic bag (which is permanently on my desk), but my cats have decided they like to sit on that… I’m scared that they’re damaging the jewellery, so I’ve been looking at alternatives.

I think I might have found that solution with these boxes from Dulwich Designs:

You can buy as many trays as you like and just stack them anyway you want. Plus they have different types of trays with various number of compartments. Awesome. My only concern is that it’s made of leather, and I think my cats might like to put their nails in that…

The boxes are available on Amazon (and a ton of other sites too) for £10-£15 per tray.

TV Preview: Ringer

May 27th, 2011

Wow, I’ve managed to stay away from blogging for more than month (42 days to be exact). As I’ve said in a previous post, I was planning on writing less here (because of my master’s thesis), but I never thought I’d not write here for an entire month. My research is going good though and I do feel that not blogging is freeing up a lot of time I hadn’t realized I was using. Anyhow, I’ll try to do some more regular updates, but don’t expect any lengthy posts any time soon.

I used to love love love Buffy The Vampire Slayer; it still remains my favourite TV show (even after 10+ years… ouch, I feel old). I was never a huge fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar though, and most things she’s done post-Buffy haven’t really been that interesting. I am very curious to see how her new TV show RInger turns out though.

Gellar plays the dual roles of twin sisters Bridget and Siobhan Martin. Bridget seems to have a troubled past: she’s a recovering alcoholic, is somehow involved with the FBI, frankly things don’t seem going that well for her. Siobhan on the other hand, seems to have the perfect life: rich, married to a gorgeous husband and not a problem in sight. When Siobhan goes missing, Bridget decides to take over her twin sister’s life, but soon realizes that not everything is as perfect as it seems.

Here’s the trailer:

So what do you think? Will you be tuning in to Ringer come fall? I’m not too sure yet, but it looks as if it could have some potential. Again, it’s one of those series though that doesn’t seem to have much longevity (maybe it would have worked better as a mini series?) and doesn’t seem to have any stand-alone episodes at all. The mystery looks intriguing though, and I’m curious to see how it will do.

More shiny jewellery! I love these designs from etsy store DESiGNERiCA, they’re just so unique:

Ugh, I’ve been meaning to write up this review for ages (lately I’ve been way to busy with my research, which is good for me, but not for my blog). Back in February I got to try out one of knomo’s suitcase bags, the Marseille. I’ve been having to fly back and forth between London and the Netherlands every month for my braces, and it seemed like the perfect time to try out the Marseille.

The Marseille I got to try out was a brown 19″ wheeled suitcase, which fits the exact measurements for carry-on luggage for Easyjet (which I was flying with) and most other airlines. There’s also a 24″ version, but for Easyjet that would have been too big (although I’m pretty sure with some airlines the guidelines are different). For me it was precisely what I needed: it’s as big as you can have for carry-on, yet with wheels to make it as maneuverable as possible for you.

What I also liked about this mini suitcase is the design and placement of all the pockets and sections. Inside, the main compartment has pockets on the side, and the “lid” (not really sure what I should call it) has a zipper on the top and two pockets underneath that (see the photo below). On the front there’s a small pocket, with enough space for travel documents, and any hand sized gadgets. Unlike a lot of previous carry-on cases I’ve tried, that pocket is also not very deep, so you don’t have to dig for anything that you put in there.

Finally, there’s a special section for your laptop, with easy acces to it (handy for security control at the airport). The laptop fits horizontally exactly into the pocket, but if you want to use a sleeve it would also fit vertically. One thing I noticed though was that if I stuffed the suitcase completely full (to be honest, maybe a little bit too full), I was forced to put the laptop vertically and the suitcase threatened to topple over each time I left it alone. I didn’t have this though when I put the laptop horizontally in, so I’m guessing that’s the “proper” way of using it.

Overall, I really liked this suitcase. It’s great if you’re looking for a handy carry-on, plus it actually looks pretty! I’m very tempted to get one for myself, cause it’s exactly what I need for my short trips to the Netherlands. The Marseille is available on the knomo site for £165 (the brown version) or £225 (the red and black versions).

Last weekend I volunteered at the LinkedGov HackCamp, a 2 day hackday for developers and designers to come up with some cool uses for government data. There were some awesome hacks, and overall the entire weekend was a great success.

We did however end up with a little bit too much food. For some reason our curry order included a huge bucket with over 5 liters of mint sauce (seriously, 5 liters?). Tom had the crazy idea to use that leftover sauce for a bottle rocket…

So after we wrapped up the HackCamp a small group of attendees went to a local park, to witness the launch of a mint sauce bottle rocket:

I was standing a safe distant away, so managed to stay clear from the splashing sauce, but Tom and the two camera guys (Julien and Alex) were completely covered in sauce! And from where I was standing I managed to get this awesome shot:

Here are some more shots from before and after the launch:

This cute TARDIS ring is only $9.95… and I’m so very very tempted to get it:

It comes from the etsy store C’s Charms, which has tons of cute rings, necklaces, earrings, cufflinks and bracelets! Here are some more items from them that I like:

Transformers Ring – $14.75

Playing Card Necklace – $9.90

Steampunk Cuff Links – $14.95

Bronze Key Necklace – $9.90

I still got a box full with Angry Birds toys, and yesterday I decided to have some fun with them and my cats.

And… I’m holding a competition on Twitter so that you can win one of these adorable birds! To enter the giveaway, just tweet about this blog post including a link to it and the hashtag #missgeeky. I’m not sure yet how many of these birds I’ll giveaway (I still have to see how many I exactly have), but the winners will be announced next Monday.

Wow, I’ve managed to not write anything here on my blog for 10 days. I’ve been so busy with working on my thesis that I just haven’t had the time to blog. I was planning on not updating as regularly as I used to, but I still want to do at least 3-5 short posts a week (which I should all just be able to write in a single evening).

This video came out a week ago and has already more than 1.5 million views on YouTube, so chances are you might have seen/heard of it already. Being the Disney fan I am though, I had to repost it here though!

I’m completely in love with this peignoir from Anthropologie’s BHLDN range (sidenote: I had to look up what a peignoir is. For those of you who were as ignorant as me, it’s a light dressing gown). It looks like something a Greek goddess would wear!

Pretty, right?
