I saw this dress on Jessica’s What I Wore blog and it’s just so cute! I love the cut and the different coloured stripes make this dress so adorable.

I’m really tempted to get it, but it’s not exactly in my price range (it’s $115.99 on ModCloth). And I’m a bit hesitant to buy clothes online; I always have trouble finding clothes that fit great (small waist, but wide hips).

Before Christmas (and before I got annoyingly sick), I attended the Tron Frisbee Battle flashmob. It was a lot of fun, even though only a couple of people showed because of the snow.

Interesting links of the week:

  • Cat vs Internet: So spot on. I love the graph the cat makes!
  • Nightmare Before Christmas Tree: Now this is the tree I want next Christmas!
  • The Noun Project: Cool project to “share, celebrate, and enhance the world’s visual language. Our goal is to collect and organize all the symbols that form our language into one easy-to-use online library that can be accessed by anyone.
  • Cwora: “This “Cwora” thing everyone’s talking about is a bit rubbish” from Tom Scott.
  • How London Buses Are Numbered: great response from TFL about bus numbers.
  • Fall 2011 TV Show Scripts: interesting list of potential new TV shows for next season. I’m intrigued by 17th Precinct (world ruled by magic, not science), Emerald City (re-imagining of the The Wizard of Oz, set in Gotham) and True Lies (based on the 1994 feature film).

Trailerrific: Mass Effect 3

January 6th, 2011

One good thing that came from being sick the past 3 weeks was that I finally was able to finish Mass Effect, jump right into Mass Effect 2 and complete that too. I’m now so looking forward to the next and final part!

I’ll do a full review some time soon, but Mass Effect is a great game for sci-fi fans. I realized that for me it really fills the void left by sfi-fi tv shows. It’s like a mix of Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek, with it’s own epic world of space exploration and aliens. I know I’m way behind on this (Mass Effect 1 came out in 2007), but it’s a brilliant game and a good place to start if till so far you’re a non-gamer.

And finally here’s the trailer for the 3rd part:

A very bleated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, everyone! It’s been way too long since I last posted something here. I’ve been sick for the past three weeks with an annoying flu, and I’ve only just recovered from it.

Christmas

The week before Christmas we visited family in the Netherlands to celebrate Christmas there slightly early, but for most of it I was feeling so weak and ill. We flew back on Christmas eve without any problems (other than me being way to weak to carry the suitcase) which kind of surprised me. With the snow and everything I was completely expecting for something to go wrong. Anyway, this was the first Christmas that me and Cristiano were alone for and we thought we’d do our own 4 course Christmas dinner. Yeah… we were both way too sick. We stopped after the second course to nap for a couple of hours.

So my holiday has pretty much been lots of sleeping, watching movies, playing Mass Effect (I finished both 1 and 2, yay me!) and cuddling the cats… hmm, pretty sure if I wasn’t sick, that would have been my holiday anyway!

I’m not in a great Christmassy mood right now; my 6am flight this morning was cancelled (which I found out at 3am, half an hour before we had to actually leave the house), I’ve still got a horrible cold, and I’m running way behind on blogposts. Still, no need for everyone to feel glum, so I’ve got a cool giveaway for you guys!

Space Paranoids

I’ve got an awesome Space Paranoids pin from Tron to giveaway! Just leave a comment behind about your favourite moment in Tron (original or sequel, doesn’t matter). You’ve got until Christmas to enter. Btw, if you re-tweet you get an extra entry!

I’ll be doing a couple more giveaways the next couple of days, so stick around (or subscribe to the feed or email updates).

Event: Tron Frisbee Flashmob

December 17th, 2010

As I said in the previous post, I really liked the new Tron movie. It’s turning into one of those movies though, of which opinions are very divided. I didn’t think it was perfect: it’s got a very weak plot (even more annoyingly weak the second time around), but the visuals are gorgeous, the music is great and it’s still a lot of fun.

I’m not sure how it started, but tomorrow there will be a Tron flashmob! Here’s the description from the Facebook page:

To celebrate the new Tron:Legacy film we are inviting you to come down and be part of TRON OFF, a game of Ultimate Frisbee Dodgeball with one team playing for the new film and one team playing for the original Tron film.

Team Captains are: Craig from The Establishing Shot playing for Tron Legacy and Andrew from Nonsense Film playing for the original Tron film.

We shall be filming this for YouTube so if you have a costume – BRING IT! Otherwise if you are playing for the original film please wear something white, and if you are playing for Tron:Legacy then please wear something black. This is so we can distinguish between the 2 teams.

We shall be giving out prizes for the best dressed and also for the best and worst throw of the day as well. Prizes have been donated by Disney and will include official Tron YoYo’s, gloves and Flynn Lives T-Shirts.

I’ll be there! Playing for the new Tron. I’m still trying to figure out if I can manage to pull a Quorra costume together. Olivia Wilde was awesome in the movie, and I’m so in love with her haircut (I don’t want to cut my hair that short again though, wondering if I can do the asymmetrical bangs with longer hair?).  So: if you’ve already seen Tron, will you be there tomorrow? And fighting for which team?

Tron Weekend!

December 17th, 2010

It’s going to be Tron Weekend the next few days here on MissGeeky! Tron was finally released today, and I’ve already managed to see it twice (not twice today though, that would be just weird). I really enjoyed the movie, despite some major flaws.

I’ve got some cool Tron related blog posts for the next couple of days, including my review and an awesome giveaway!

This video has been retweeted quite a lot of times the past few days, so it’s likely you might have seen it already, but it’s awesome:

How many movies did you recognize? All 270 of them?

This post was written in December 2008, but it seemed like the perfect time to repost it here.

I’ve already finished all my Christmas shopping for this year, so I thought I’d give my best tips.

1. Don’t Wait Until The Last Minute

My best tip has to be: don’t wait until the last minute. Don’t go the day before Christmas to find your presents. For starters, you’re not the only person with the same idea; it will be one of busiest days in the high street. Plus, there’s less chance you’ll find what you are searching for.

2. Don’t See It As A Chore

If there is another thing you shouldn’t do, it’s this. Seeing Christmas shopping as a chore will only make you postpone it, and thus, leaving it to the last minute. I always like to see it as a challenge, as a puzzle, trying to figure out what present is suitable for which person.

3. Don’t Give Gift Vouchers, Money, Ties or Socks

In my book, a big no no. Unless they are cute knee high black-and-white striped socks, this is just an easy way out. Just think about it: if everyone started doing this, what’s the point of exchanging presents? I’d be much happier with a smaller gift that’s worth maybe less, than a gift voucher with no real thought behind it. (Mind you, I am talking about direct family present exchange here. If it’s a not too close friend or a distant family member, it should be fine)

4. Pay Attention Throughout The Entire Year

So how do you get someone a gift that he/she really wants? Now the best way is just to pay attention throughout the year. Be aware and keep note of what the person says when they want something. Also handy: drill people two months before Christmas about what they want. If you do it right (meaning sneaky and not too suspect), you’ll end up with loads of ideas. Plus you can’t really do it a couple of days before Christmas, cause then the person will know what it’s all about.

5. Analyze Your Subject

If getting tips from the person doesn’t help, you’ll have to figure it out all by your lonesome. So: analyze your subject. What does this person like to do? What hobbies? TV shows, sports? The really geeky way is to make a mind map out of it all, and just write everything down that pops into your mind.

6. Keep Your Receipts

I actually don’t always do this myself, not with all receipts at least. But there are a couple which you definitely should keep: 1. clothing (in case it doesn’t fit), 2. gadgets/electronics (often the receipt is also the warranty), 3. cd/dvd/book (in case the person has it already, unless you think you’ll always be able to flog it to someone else).

7. Remember What You Bought (And Wrapped Up)

You should always write down and keep a list of all the stuff you’ve bought, with how much everything had cost. Next time you go shopping, take that list with you, so you know who you still have to get something for. Then what I always do is wrap stuff up and forgetting what was in it; always handy to keep track of this too.

8. Shop Online

Every time I mention to someone that I do a lot of my shopping online, they stare at me and tell me that’s cheating. Cheating?!? How does me knowing what I want to get and order it at a place I know that has it classify as ‘cheating’? How is that worse than you buying socks the day before Christmas? The thing you have to keep in mind with online shopping is that you shouldn’t go for the ‘top 10’ lists and stuff like that. You have to KNOW what you want to get.

9. Try To Avoid Weekend Shopping

Easier said than done, right? Cause when you can otherwise shop. Well, (and I know this isn’t perfect) a lot of stores are open to quite late, especially in such malls like Westfield (they’re open till 11pm on week days).

10. Create A Present “Diary”

Yeah, so this isn’t really a tip for now, but one for next year. Remember tip 4 “Pay Attention The Entire Year”? Do this next year. And take it one step further. Write it down when someone mentions they want something or when they mention they’re looking for a certain item. What I mainly do is keep track of the stuff I see in stores, always shelving certain items in a mental bookshelf as possible gift ideas for one person.

Any tips you can give me that I’ve left out?
